For centuries APPLES have enjoyed a warm spot in the hearts of man.  Most of these varieties will
grow and will bear good fruit in the United States.  Like other temperate-zone fruits, most of the apples will
require four-seasons where they will receive 900 to 1200 hours of chilling to really flourish.  Most apples will
bear fruit in the Zones 6 and 7, while a few will grow well in the warmer parts of Zone 5 and those able to
produce fair to good fruit with fewer hours of chill –down to 200 – can grow in Zones 8 and 9.
The important point to remember in matching apple trees to your climate is to find a variety that blooms
just after the last killing frost and ripens just ahead of the first freezes in the autumn.   There is no sure fire
index for this.  Local climates radically affect the blossom and the harvest times.  However, your local nursery
staff and county extension agents can offer the names of well-suited varieties.
Store fruit for winter use in cardboard or wooden boxes that are well ventilated to allow air circulation.
Do not line the boxes with paper or individually wrap the fruit.  The best storage temperature should be 30 to
32 degrees.  Temperatures below 30 degrees or higher than 45 degrees should be avoided.
Immediately after picking the fruit, store it.  Do not store with onions, potatoes, or other strong smelling
items as the fruit will absorb flavor volatiles from them.  Maintain high humidity in storage.  Inspect regularly
for mold, flesh breaking down, freezing, or excessive ripening.   The storage life of the fruit varies as to the
variety and the storage temperature. The apple that is held too long will become soft and mealy with possible
internal breakdown.
