           Hydrangea, a summer bloomer
with its large globular or lace-cap
blooms of pink, blue, purple or white is
truly a delight.  Discovered along the
river  banks in China and Japan, it was
brought to Europe by a plant collector
in 1880.  The name hydrangea comes
from the Greek word hydro (meaning
water) and the word angion (meaning
bowl or tub) indicating that the plant
loves water and humidity.  The
hydrangea is also known as hortensia,
after the sweetheart of the French
botanist, Philbert Commerson, who
first described the plant.
Generally the Hydrangea
macrophylla is divided into two
groups:  the Hortensias with sterile
flowers forming a large globular head,
and the lace-caps that have a delicate
ring of large sterile flowers
surrounding a cluster of tiny fertile
ones.  These two groups have many,
many cultivars.
The color of the flowers is
defined by the soil’s Ph.   It is the soil’s
acidity that affects the take-up of
aluminum by the plant and this in turn
determines whether the flower will be
pink, purple, or blue.  An acidic (3.3-
5.5) Ph of a soil increases the release of
aluminum making it readily available
for the plant.  A soil with a more
alkaline Ph (5.5-7.5) will tie up the
aluminum and make it unavailable to
the plant.  To increase the acidity apply
aluminum sulfate to the soil.  To
decrease the acidity apply lime or
phosphate.  To encourage white
blossoms on a hydrangea apply
magnesium sulphate.  The best time to
add these soil amendments is in
Autumn.
